The appeal of a true thoroughbred comes from deep within the soul. Real beauty in motion provokes a sharp intake of breath, just like seeing a Spitfire slow-rolling in the clouds or a catamaran right up on the edge in a stiff wind. And in motor sport there is no greater pleasure than seeing a racing classic which, by design and victorious success, stands first among its peers.
Each in its own way brings a deep, sonorous glow and renewed confidence in our understanding of the nature of excellence and of what being the best really means. Racing cars do that for us so there is always a place in the garage as well as the heart for any car that races.
Nothing stirs the emotions more than sports racing cars from the late 1960s and early 1970s. We love them all. We would go anywhere and pay anything to see racing Ferraris, in particular the 330P4, and Porsches 917 and RSR Turbo. But here’s the quandary: few of us would want to risk a real classic in the cut and thrust of modern historic racing or on a busy track day. So if you don’t want to risk the real thing, the only way to race a 917, RSR Turbo or P4 is to build one.
Well, that’s what we do. Ten years ago we recreated a P4 which we have raced ever since. It is knocked and scratched and it wears its scars with pride, each one the result of a close shave that has seen the car win, lose or draw. It’s the best looking car on the grid and we’ve been able to enjoy many afternoons of hard racing without the car’s value hindering the driver’s enthusiasm. It has won several championships outright and remains the most elegant shape for a car that was ever made. Ask us and we’ll build one for you. However, once you’ve started racing it is just a matter of time before you look longingly at the racing Porsches. They are ruthless in their design and reliability. And, of course, who could not want the 917 – the Kurzheck (or ShortTail) 917K being, arguably, the pick of the bunch. Our cars are not only as near-perfect visual recreations as possible, but have evolved under the skin with updated features for safety and performance - the chassis is built from aero-specification chrome-moly steel (not aluminium as in the originals) and the suspension is designed to cope with modern tyre technology and braking forces.
Our other favourite Porsche is the RSR Turbo – a perfect car to build. They were so heavily based on the 930 Porsche that with some careful attention to detail it is fairly straightforward to build an FIA specification car. Having a car like this gives you a passport to race in fabulous events throughout the world.
These bespoke cars are not trailer queens or exhibition-only replicas. They are cars to take to a track and, like the originals, blow everything else away.
Getting out of bed in the morning is a little more exciting knowing that you have a real classic in your garage. So why not make your own history, tell your own stories and race your own thoroughbred? |
